I am still exploring what might be done with mapping applications and the use of social media. In this example I combined or mashed data from one map with…Continue

Our Society maps: your suggestions

Firstly this is not a discussion to cover the same ground as Our Square Mile , although either could include a sort of index of local maps. It's more a kind of round up of…Continue

Localism, Red Tories and Blue Labour

Started by Jeff Mowatt Jun 9, 2011. 0 Replies

A post on the LSE politics blog describes the two camps, Blond's Red Tories and Glasman's Blue Labour. It dawns on me that what's being said about reforming business and promoting localism is based on an assumption that it all started with…Continue

How can we link social visionaries to hard nosed business people?

Started by Gavin. Last reply by Jeff Mowatt Apr 25, 2011. 10 Replies

I don’t know whether any of you saw a recent article in the Times about ‘Social entrepreneurs’ but it was a really interesting piece exploring some of the strong similarities between business and social entrepreneurship, along with  interesting…Continue

How can we co-develop resources to help sustain Our Society?

Started by Phil Green. Last reply by Jeff Mowatt Mar 21, 2011. 7 Replies

There's a risk that this is the wrong question at the wrong time, in which case of course it can simply be ignored. But perhaps co-design includes a willingness to confront difficult challenges as and when they arise?…Continue

Enlivening or refreshing the main page design a bit, and hopefully stimulating a bit more interactivity perhaps:

more specifically, (than last post):

1. It's perhaps good that groups (3rd col) carry over onto other pages, so suggest just set to show 20 (we have 34) (I kind of like the way the images come up bigger in the central col, but its a trade off)
2. Ist col: move 'members' up to top or 2nd top, more welcoming, social looking than text. Move 'join mailing list' & 'timeline' to end as less about interactivity within the site.
3. middle col: move 'event 20 jan' to end, is getting to be history now, photos and videos more likely to stimulate interaction.

Should OurSociety's main page give more prominence to groups as for example NatCAN  does? Also Project Dirt?

Perhaps Our Society should be a 'person oriented' society?

An interesting blog fron UK Uncut

I've been wondering of late - Just how common is real collaboration rather than talking about it.  I was struck recently by the apparent contradiction of advocates for collaborating and sharing and the dismissal of 'baby boomers' as being incapable of understanding.

Possibly related: comment on oursociety's Our Purpose page

Possibly related discussion  and comment  "...there must be a collective understanding and shared vision underpinning the diversity?"

If and when the time is right for co-designing something like this or 'shared values' I'd advocate using mixedink.com  eg co-developing the text from our society's 'About us' page

Welcome to new members to the group. As I posted over here we've had a great few days of discussion on an ideas platform which led to 29 suggestions on ways to take forward the Our Society network, and things that we might do or influence. Do please take a look at the platform, add ideas, comment or vote. After a few days we'll review the ideas, see if we can consolidate, and then see how we might take things forward.

On behalf of the core organising group. Any queries, do get in touch or drop a comment here.

Andrew Kirk Comment by Andrew Kirk on January 21, 2011 at 12:46pm

Couldn't make it to the event yesterday but I'd be interested to hear any feedback on ideas which were discussed there & get a better idea of how I could help out. I've been involved in a few campaigning/ fundraising groups before so there's probably a few ways I could help take the group forward.

Something I'm working on at the moment is developing a platform for different cities to have their own TV channel. The one for Leeds is coming on well & I'd be interested to hear any suggestions on what you would like to see broadcast. The idea behind it is to bring together different community groups, local businesses etc & also tie in to various live events. I think it might fit in well with the idea behind OurSociety & help raise the profile of what you're doing. Look forward to hearing your suggestions & hopefully see you at the next event.

Postcode for venue is LS11 5QP - we're missing a "P" on the eventbrite listing, though the map etc is correct :)
