Wake up! The big society cavalry aren't coming

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 6:45 4 Comments

Anyone familiar withTolkien’s The Lord of the Rings will recall the scene. Whether you’ve read the book, seen the film or both, there are few things more stirring than the Riders of Rohan storming to the rescue of the besieged forces of Gondor.

Tolkien does it on an epic scale, with thousands of horsemen galloping around the shoulder of the mountain to bring hope to the beleaguered forces of goodness and justice. But it’s a…

Building our society - there's more to it than giving

Posted on May 23, 2011 at 16:52 3 Comments

If you thought the Big Society had vanished into thin air, the news is that the Rapture hasn’t happened - it’s still with us.

But rather than a Big Society promoted by government, or even a lower case ‘big society’ as outlined recently by Nick Denys, a variety of societies seem to be emerging.

Given the lack of understanding out on the streets of what government and their advisers… Continue

Community organisers: collaborators or prophets?

Of all the discussions that followed last week’s troubles in Bristol, perhaps the most important is a series of posts by Tessy Britton on conflict and collaboration, and the online chat that has surrounded them.…

Five tests for the big society's second year

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 9:49 3 Comments

Yesterday may have been the best day’s business for Britain’s pubs and bars in a long time, as thousands of local government and voluntary sector workers drowned their sorrows and looked forward to a very uncertain future.
For many the disappointment was not just personal - the loss of livelihood (sometimes cushioned by a redundancy package), the apparently wasted years of professional development, the lack of opportunity or the bleak prospects of self-employment in a cut-throat…

Hi Julian

Thank you for welcoming me to your site I developed Abstract Space a year ago and we are celebrating our first anniversary we have not had to receive any funding, we had a poetry recital at Nottingham Playhouse as I have links with the Open Arts form made up of arts organisations aimed at helping service users throughout Nottingham, Everyone has given us great comments and we have all benefited through being a part of City Arts and through Community Cohesiveness Policy in Nottingham

thanks Julian.

These kinds of sites really frustrate me as they it is often so difficukt to find basic stuff! Two Qs can someone help me on:

1. how do I post a message to someone, ie how to find their name to click on? Do we have to scroll through 340+ names in alphabetical order till we find it? I had to go back to the email from you to get back to this screen. Or maybe I am as often missing the obvious?

2. What is the difference between a Group and a discussion in the Forum?

Thanks.

Is it possible to have a setting to get emails for a particular discussion posted to my inbox rather than to have to visit the website? I am interested for the moment in just the discussion about community organising. I don't find these sites very easy to find my way around. And so the time is too much otherwise.

Eileen

Hi Julian

thanks for the welcome. Just to say will try to follow the exchanges but very little time just now. But very involved in community action as activist in London, and working on articuating the dynamics of the grassroots which are not understood very well. Also on personal note I am half a Dobson as my mother's father was a Dobson from Gateshead, Tyneside...

Hi Julian & welcome to Our Society!

This network is in the early stages of development so we'd very much appreciate any comments or suggestions that you have. I've set up a Feedback Forum for this, so please do share your thoughts there.

You can read a bit more about Our Society and what we hope to achieve by having a read of our About Us page.

As a quick way to get the ball rolling, please feel free to say hello and tell us a bit about yourself in the "Who are you?" thread.

Thanks again for joining, please contact me if you have any problems, and do feel free to set up your own group or discussion - I'm happy to assist with either.
